Packing list for traveling with a baby

Traveling with a baby means a longer list: diapers and wipes, feeding supplies, a stroller or carrier, sleep things, baby medicine and a thermometer, a favorite toy and spare outfits, plus your baby's documents. Keep the journey essentials in one bag you can reach. Here's the checklist.

  1. Diapers and wipes

More than you think you'll need for the journey.

Tip: A simple rule: one diaper for every two hours of travel, plus extras for delays.

  2. Feeding supplies

Bottles, formula or baby food, a bib and a spoon, depending on how your baby eats.

Tip: If you're flying, check the security rules for baby food and milk. In the US, see TSA's guidance for traveling with children.

  3. Stroller or baby carrier

A stroller for long walks, a carrier for crowds and stairs.

Tip: Check your airline's rules for strollers and car seats before you go.

  4. Changing mat

Not every restroom has a changing table.

Tip: A foldable mat fits in the diaper bag.

  5. Sleep things

A sleep sack and anything that's part of your baby's bedtime routine.

Tip: Ask your hotel or rental whether they provide a crib, and follow safe sleep guidance wherever you stay.

  6. Baby medicine and a thermometer

Anything your pediatrician has recommended, plus a thermometer.

Tip: Ask your pediatrician what to bring, especially for longer trips.

  7. Sun protection

Shade, a sun hat and light clothing that covers arms and legs.

Tip: Ask your pediatrician about sunscreen for babies under 6 months.

  8. Favorite toy and spare outfits

Something familiar helps in a new place, and spare outfits handle spills.

Tip: Pack a spare top for yourself in your carry-on, too.

  9. Documents for your baby

Babies may need their own passport or ID to travel abroad.

Tip: Check the official government rules for your trip well before you go. In the US, see travel.state.gov. International travel checklist

  10. A list built for your trip

A baby list depends on how long you're away and what you'll do.
