Checklist
What to pack for rainy weather on a trip
When rain is in the forecast, pack a rain jacket, a compact umbrella, waterproof shoes, quick-drying layers and a dry bag for your phone and electronics. Add spare socks and line up a few indoor plans. Here's the list, with tips for keeping things dry.
Rain jacket
A light, packable jacket with a hood.
Tip: Wear it on travel days to save space.
Compact umbrella
Handy in cities, less so on windy coasts or trails.
Tip: Choose a small one that fits in a day bag.
Waterproof shoes
Wet feet can spoil a day faster than wet clothes.
Tip: Break them in before the trip.
Spare socks
Dry socks make a big difference.
Tip: Pack a few extra pairs in a separate bag.
Quick-dry layers
Synthetic layers dry faster than cotton.
Tip: Layer up rather than packing one heavy sweater.
Dry bag for electronics
Keeps your phone, charger and camera dry in a downpour.
Tip: A zip-top bag works in a pinch.
A bag for wet things
Keeps damp clothes away from dry ones in your suitcase.
Tip: A laundry bag or a plastic bag works.
Indoor plans
Museums, cafés, markets and covered sights for the rainy hours.
Tip: Save a few indoor ideas before you go.
Check the forecast again
Forecasts change, especially more than a few days out.
Tip: Look again the day before you leave and adjust your bag.
Let the forecast shape the list
A rain jacket, umbrella and waterproof shoes get added when your dates look wet.
Tip: Packd reads the daily forecast for your destination and dates from 16 days before you go and adds rain items to match. It's a forecast, not a guarantee. Get my packing list
