What to wear in 40, 50, 60 or 70 degree weather
Our rule of thumb: at 70 °F (21 °C) a top with pants or shorts is enough; at 60 °F (16 °C) add a light jacket or cardigan; at 50 °F (10 °C) wear a sweater or hoodie under a light jacket; at 40 °F (4 °C) you want a sweater, a warm jacket, a hat and gloves. Enter the daytime high, the night low and your days away to see the layers for both and a list to pack.

Our rule for the bands
This is our own rule of thumb for packing, not a scientific scale: people feel cold differently, and sun, humidity and activity change how a temperature feels. With wind at 65 °F (18 °C) or below, we dress one band cooler and add a jacket that blocks the wind. Mid layers: one per 4 days away, up to 3, since they can be worn again. For how many tops, pants, underwear and socks to pack, use the packing calculator. Runs in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.

By our rule, 50 °F is in the cool band (46–55 °F): a top, a sweater or hoodie and a light jacket, with pants and closed shoes. If it's windy, dress for the cold band instead: a warm jacket, a hat and gloves.
What should I wear in 60 degree weather?
60 °F is in the mild band (56–65 °F): a top and a light jacket or cardigan, with pants. If the night low is 45 °F or below, pack a sweater and a warm jacket for the evening.
What should I wear in 70 degree weather?
70 °F is in the warm band (66–75 °F): one layer, a top with pants or shorts. Pack a cardigan or hoodie if the night low drops to 65 °F or below.
What should I wear in 40 degree weather?
40 °F is in the cold band (33–45 °F): three layers, a top, a sweater and a warm jacket, plus a hat, gloves, a scarf and warm socks. At 32 °F or below, add a thermal base layer.
What should I wear in 20 degree Celsius weather?
20 °C (68 °F) is in the warm band (19–24 °C): one layer, a top with pants or shorts. Switch the unit to °C and the bands follow it.
How is this different from the packing calculator?
The packing calculator counts tops, pants, underwear and socks for your days away. This tool picks the layers for the temperatures. Use both for a full list.
Is my forecast saved or sent anywhere?
No. The tool runs in your browser. Print the list, or tick items off on the page as you pack.
